DEPTH IMPROVISATION
AN EMBODIED APPROACH TO IMPROVISATION AND AWARENESS

Improvisation.........

Has many connotations. It's often associated with comedy clubs and popular television shows.  Some say "I'll improvise" when they lack a scripted approach to handle a particular situation. Some musicians improvise with a musical score. In most cases, improvising seems to have a mysterious association with especially gifted individuals who can create magic in the moment. But consider that all of us improvise every day of our lives. We don't prepare our conversations in advance nor do we plan the way we plant our feet along a walking path. In our ever changing environment, we all improvise to survive.  While improvising is part of our genetic inheritance, the ability often lies dormant. We can further develop the gift to awaken our latent abilities.

Depth Improvisation.....

W
hat if we could respond to our changing world with even greater agility? Better yet, what if we could recognize that life is constantly transforming and we could actively participate in the subtlety of each moment? Developing the natural ability to improvise is a path to seeing the world as if for the very first time. When practiced as an active discipline, Depth Improvisation can lead to heightened awareness, greater ability to embrace change, and a deeper, more intuitive listening. Depth Improvisation integrates the perspective that, under all our seeming separation and independence, vitality emerges from our profound connectivity.

Action Theater .....

Is a captivating excursion into the mind, heart, and body of improvisational expression. No scripts, no memorizing, no pre-set choreography, just moving, making sounds, and saying what comes to you in a supportive, playful group setting. AT differs from standard improvisational theater in that participants do not assume roles in scenes. Through exercises devised to explore the building blocks of improvisation, students will learn how to focus attention on how the body, imagination, and mind each contribute valuable information and collaborate toward improvisational content.

At some point, we must look inward for our education. We must notice what inhibits our freedom, be willing to give up all preconceptions, be truthful and relax, in order to act from lively emptiness - Ruth Zaporah, creator and founder of Action Theater.
